Access to my storage
What is the difference between office hours and gate hours?
The office hours are the hours of operation when the storage manager will be able to assist with your inquiries. The gate hours are the hours when your storage unit can be accessed (standard working hours). If you require access outside standard working hours ask your storage manager for information about 24 hour access.
Do I need 24 hour access to my unit?
Do you want the freedom to access your belongings at a time to suit you? If so then ask if 24 hour access is available at your location, or if access restricted to office hours only.
What do I do if I forget my access pin code or key to my storage padlock?
You should contact your storage manager during office hours and they will be able to help you.
What are the hours I can access my storage unit?
In the first instance, your access hours will be set out in your agreement. Our standard access hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. 24 Hour access is available at our Bristol storage location.
If you need to speak to a member of staff then office hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm and closed Sunday.
Can I have 24 hour access?
Yes. Some of our customers like the freedom of accessing their belongings whenever they want. Sometimes you may need to pop in first thing in the morning or last thing at night?
We do not charge extra for extended hours access, so at the time of booking ask if 24 hour access is available and we can active it.
Please keep your access pin code somewhere handy, we are unable to retrieve it for you outside office hours.
What are your opening times?
Office hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm and closed Sunday, so if you have a question please get in touch during office opening times.
If you are looking to access your storage unit, then access hours will be set out in your agreement. Do you charge extra for 24 hour/outside office/normal hours access?
No. We don’t like hidden cost, so we don’t charge them.
Changing storage unit
Can I move to a different sized storage unit after I have moved in?
Yes. Our aim is to provide you as much flexibility as possible. If the alternative unit size you are looking for is available, then yes you can move to another size. Your storage manager will be able to advise you on availability.
I’ve reserved the wrong size, can I change it?
Yes. We do everything we can to get you the right sized storage unit before you move in, but sometimes you just have more than you thought you needed. We will show you your storage unit when you arrive and if it’s not suitable you can change it to the next available size. Our handy Space Calculator might help you gauge the right space for you.

Does RedSpot offer a best price guarantee?
Yes. Our Price Promise is simple. You’ll get the best price quoted online or by speaking with a member of our team. As storage experts we try to keep in tune with market cycles, but if you manage to find a better offer for a comparable service, let us know, as we won't be beaten on value.
Are there any student discounts?
No, but we update our online prices regularly. By holding and reserving your storage space online you can lock in the latest discounts. Alternatively, check out our special offers or speak to your storage manager about any other new offers we may have.
Are there discounts for members of the Armed forces, MOD, Emergency Services & NHS?
Yes. You will receive a 10% discount on our standard storage rates. Just provide a valid copy of your ID at the time of moving in to qualify.
Do you have discounts if I pay in advance for long term storage?
Yes. We are able to offer you a 5% discount if you prepay 6 months (or more) in advance on our standard storage rates.
Do you offer a refer a friend discount?
Yes. If you recommend a friend that we have not already started to discuss storage with, and they store with us for the minimum period, you will receive a discount or voucher up to the value of £25. Terms and Conditions apply.
Facilities and features
Is there an electricity supply to my storage unit?
No. Our storage units do not typically have access to electrical power. If you do however require this service we can arrange to have a power supply installed. There could be an additional cost depending on your requirements. Please ask your storage manager for further details.
Do you have shelving in the storage unit?
No. Your individual unit is cleared of all equipment and cleaned thoroughly between each customer’s stay. If you would like shelving, please speak to your storage manager for further assistance. There could be an additional cost depending on your requirements.
Can I park at the storage location?
Yes. All storage units allow you to park right next to your unit’s door, so if you have heavy or bulky items you can load your belongings straight in. Some of our locations have other dedicated spaces for vehicle storage and parking.

Can you help with things delivered or collected when I am not there?
Yes. Discuss your requirements with your storage manager, and we will try and make arrangements to have deliveries made or items collected on your behalf.
Can you advise me on recommended removal companies/Man with Van/Van hire?
Yes. We have a list of reliable and trusted local companies who can help organise your move with you. In fact the only reason we will pass on their details is because we keep getting good feedback from our customers about their own experiences.

What storage units do you have?
The majority of storage units available are all 8 feet (2.5 metres) in height, and are arranged in the follow sizes:
- 40 sq ft (about a transit/VW transporter van size),
- 80 sq ft (approximately 2 X transit/VW transporter van loads),
- 120 sq ft (approximately 3 X transit/VW transporter van loads, and
- 160 sq ft (approximately 4 X transit/VW transporter van loads).
Alternatively, if you are looking to securely store a few boxes or a suitcase, then consider one of the spaces available in the student room. These range in size from a locker size: 35ft3 (1.0m3) to a space the size of a telephone box: 70 Ft3 (2.0m3).
How high are your storage units?
All our individual storage units are 8 feet (2.5 metres) in height, and offer the same high throughout the unit. No sloping roofs! The only exception is the locker space in our student room which is 3feet (1.0metres) in height.
How much storage space do I need?
To find the right amount of space you need, firstly think about how you are going to use your extra space. If you are looking for personal storage whilst travelling abroad, then imagine your items stacked up to the ceiling in your storage unit. Your fees are based on the floor area, not the height.
Alternatively, as a regular business storage user, you may prefer to allow for space to arrange and easily access your inventory or stock.
To ensure you have the best chance of getting this right, please get in touch to arrange a visit to your preferred storage location. Talk through the option with your storage manager – they do this every day so make use of their expertise.

Are your storage units damp?
No. All storage containers are specifically designed to keep the weather out so your belongings stay dry. Click here to read our customer reviews. To ensure that we are doing everything to avoid your possessions being affected by damp, we regularly check the units for wear and tear.
Do you provide trolleys?
No. All storage units allow you to park at the front door, so if you have heavy or bulky items you can load your belongings straight in. There’s no need to use a trolley.
Is the storage location important?
Yes. If you require quick and easy access to your belongings, then choose a storage location that is convenient to your home or place of work.
How do I get started with self storage?
Firstly, find the storage location that is most convenient to your home or place of work. Contact your storage manager to discuss the units available or use the Space Calculator to choose a space that is right for you. Are family, friends or my customers allowed in my storage unit?
Yes. As long as they are not left unattended, they are free to be accompanied into the unit. Please remember that under the terms of your Customer Licence Agreement you are fully responsible and liable for these people whilst at the storage location.
Do you charge VAT on your fees?
Yes. RedSpot Self Storage Limited is VAT registered, and where applicable prices quoted include VAT. Your invoice will set out the VAT paid.
I’m ready to reserve my storage space, what should I do?
We often run web specials, so take advantage of these great prices and hold your storage space online. Alternatively, please get in touch and speak to a member of our team and we can reserve your unit over the phone.

What happens if I hold my storage space online?
If you chose to hold your storage space online, you can lock in an offer, there’s no credit card required and no obligation for up to 24 hours. We’ll then contact you to confirm a reservation, and to see if you have any other questions about storage? It is only then we will ask you to pay a refundable reservation Fee. How do I cancel my reservation?
To give you plenty of flexibility, you can reserve a storage unit for up to eight weeks in advance. If the unexpected happens just let us know and we can update the reservation for you. Alternatively, if you do change your mind then we’ll still refund your reservation fee up to a week before your anticipated move in date. Terms and Conditions apply.
How do I make a reservation?
You can hold a storage unit online, over the phone, or by dropping into your chosen storage location.
If you chose to hold your storage unit online, you can lock in an offer, there’s no credit card required and no obligation for up to 24 hours. We’ll then contact you to confirm a reservation, and to see if you have any other questions about storage? It is only then we will ask you to pay a refundable reservation fee of £12, which will be deducted from you first payment when you move in.
By reserving you are able to guarantee the storage unit, price and offer for up to eight weeks in advance of your move in date. Terms and Conditions apply.
How far in advance can I reserve a storage space for?
RedSpot Self Storage allows customers to reserve a storage unit up to eight weeks in advance. If you would like to reserve a unit for longer, please speak to your storage manager and they will make other arrangements for you.
How long do I have to rent my storage unit?
You can use our storage services for as long as you like, there is not set date to move out. We will provide you with an invoice every four weeks, and as soon as you are ready to move out just give us 14 days written notice. There’s no long-term contract; you only keep the storage unit for as long as you need.
I’ve moved and need to update my contact details?
Please email, phone, or pop into you storage location and we will update your details.
Do your storage units get hot or cold?
Generally self storage facilities don’t have individually temperature/humidity controlled units, unless its specialised services like a wine storage facility.
Your storage unit will be warmer in the summer and colder in the winter. However, our storage units are purpose built for storage and individually vented to allow air to circulate. After all, they are shipping containers and are very tough and designed to transport everyday items across the oceans of the world.
I have booked a unit, but my dates have now changed?
To give you plenty of flexibility, you can reserve a storage unit for up to eight weeks in advance. If the unexpected happens just get in touch and we can update the reservation for you.
Do I need to supply ID to get a storage unit?
Yes. Security is very important to all our customers, and therefore we will ask you for two forms of identification before you store your items.
Please bring along one form of ID from group A and one from group B (less than 3 months old as at today’s date):
- Group A: Driving Licence (current), Passport (valid), Employee ID card (photo).
- Group B: Utilities bill (gas, electric, water), Council Tax bill (current year), bank statement, credit or store card statement, telephone bill, home/motor insurance documents, Council or Housing Association rent book, Tenancy agreement, pension book, DSS/benefits agency payment book.
Why do I need Insurance when using self storage?
Your possessions will not be covered should they be placed in storage without adequate insurance. To protect you against loss or damage, your items must be insured. Please bring along proof of insurance cover, or ask your storage manager about our insurance cover.
How much is storage insurance?
We are unable to quote on full insurance cover, as this is based on the full replacement value of the items being placed in your storage unit. However, once you have an idea of the value of your items then the cost of our insurance is based off £0.75 per week for each £1,000 insurance cover. Our polices start from a minimum value of just £1,000.
What does the storage insurance cover?
Your goods are protected whilst in storage under a bespoke Self Storage Operators insurance policy provided by Royal & Sun Alliance.
In the event that loss or damage occurs to your possessions, they will be repaired or replaced on a “new for old” basis. Full details of cover are set out in the summary of our insurance policy found under the terms and conditions pages of our website.
Can I use my own insurance?
Yes, bring along proof of your insurance cover before your items are placed in storage. If your own insurers will extend your existing policy, don’t forget to keep the insurance valid and up to date at all times.
To ensure that this cover is adequate, your insurance provider must confirm each of the following points in writing:
- The insurer’s name. The letter must be on the official headed paper of the insurance provider and an original copy.
- That the goods are covered whilst in storage at the address of your RedSpot Self Storage location.
- The period during which the insurance cover begins and ends.
- The maximum value of the goods (or sum insured).
- That all the following Insured Perils are confirmed as covered under the policy from your provider:
- Actual physical loss of or damage to Goods caused by fire, lightning, explosion, earthquake, aircraft or articles dropped there from, storm, flood, bursting & /or leaking pipes, ingress of water or other liquid substance, moth, insect or vermin from an external cause, theft accompanied by forcible and violent entry to or exit from the building or storage unit, riot, strike, civil commotion, malicious damage, and impact by vehicles or railway rolling stock.
How do I complete an inventory?
Although it’s not a condition of the policy to complete an inventory of the items placed in storage, it’s a good idea to start putting together an inventory of your items as soon as you start to pack and get ready for your move. This way you can use it for an insurance inventory, as a record to help organise your move. If you haven’t received a copy of our insurance inventory, then please download here a copy or contact your storage manager and they will be happy to send one to you.
To complete the inventory, start by listing all large or valuable items separately or group similar items together, i.e. 10 pairs of trousers, 100 DVDs etc. Each individual item, or group of items, must have a separate value. The total value of all your items will be the full replacement value for insurance purposes.
Do I have to provide an inventory?
Although it’s not a condition of the policy to complete an inventory of the items placed in storage, it’s a good idea to start putting together an inventory of your items as soon as you start to pack and get ready for your move. If you remove or add to your belongings in storage don’t forget to note the changes to the inventory.
Length of stay
What is the minimum time I can store for?
Our minimum storage period is the equivalent of 14 days. Standard rates apply.
Can I use my storage unit for longer than I thought?
Yes. You can use our storage services for as long as you like, there’s no set date to move out. After the initial payment, we will provide you with an invoice every 4 weeks, and as soon as you are ready to move out just give us 14 days written notice. There are no long-term contracts or commitments; you only keep the storage unit for as long as you need.
Can I move in to my storage unit today?
Yes, please bring along with you the following:
- proof of identity (a passport);and
- proof of address (a utility bill);
We can set you up to move in straight away. Don’t forget to check the opening hours of your preferred storage location before you come, or get in touch and arrange for one of the team to meet you at the storage location.
What time do I need to be there to move in?
You can visit the storage location anytime during office opening hours; allow about 15 minutes to complete the paperwork. To make the process as quick and easy as possible, we recommend making an appointed time before you arrive.
If you cannot visit during these hours, speak to your storage manager to discuss other arrangements as exceptions can be made.
Do I need a padlock for my storage unit?
Yes, you will need a padlock, and if you have a secure one of your own bring it along. Alternatively we have a range of hardened steel padlocks and accessories starting at £14.00 (inc VAT). Have a look through our packing supplies page for further details.
I’m ready to move out of my storage unit, what do I need to do?
Just provide us with 14 days written notice before you move. There are no long-term contracts or commitments; you only keep the storage unit for as long as you need.
Please email, write or pop into you storage location and we will confirm that notice has been received.
When you have collected your belongings, leave the storage unit in the same condition as when you began, remove your lock and return any keys or equipment we may have provided you with. As soon as we have access we will check over your storage unit and close the account accordingly.
When do I get any refund due?
As soon as we have access we will check over your storage unit and close the account. Any refund will be returned to you within 14 days. by cheque or bank transfer.
If I don’t give you notice, what happens?
We will presume that you are still using the storage unit and therefore charge you for the service. Please let us know as soon as you are ready to move out.
Do I have to clean my storage unit when I move out?
Please leave your storage unit in the same condition as when you began to use the service. If your unit is not clean and cleared of all your belongings then you may incur charges for cleaning and waste disposal. Or, for a small fee, we can clean it for you, please get in touch with your storage manager if yo you need this service.
Do you sell boxes and other packing materials?
Yes. We have a wide variety of boxes, packing materials, padlocks and other accessories that you can purchase. Have a look at what we can provide on our packing supplies page.

How can I pay for my storage?
We accept MasterCard and Visa debit/credit cards, cash and business cheque. Unfortunately we are unable to accept other types of cards at this time.
Can I pay my bill online?
Yes, payment of your bill online can be done via our payment gateway. The simplest way to pay online is to follow the link in your latest invoice. This will then provide instructions how to pay online.
How do I get a statement of my account?
To access your account area, the simplest way is to follow the link in your latest invoice. You can view your payment history, get a statement or print of copies of past invoices.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
All customers are required to pay a minimum security deposit of four weeks storage fees before storing your possessions. However, by providing us with your Direct Debit details we can reduce this to just one week’s fees.
Some of our storage units also require you to hold a RedSpot key, which we will provide to you on move in. In such cases, we will ask for a returnable key deposit of £20.00.
What are the payment terms?
All fees are charged on a four weekly basis in advance. This is calculated from the day you move in. All refunds are calculated on a daily basis. If you wish to pay in advance or for other periods then contact your storage manager and we will make suitable arrangements.
How do I set up a Direct Debit?
On the day you move in we take your Direct Debit details. The majority of our customers prefer the convenience of paying by Direct Debit. Once set up, you can then pay your fees every four weeks until you advice us that you no longer require storage.
Can I still have access if my bill isn’t paid?
You will be sent an invoice notifying you that your fees have become due. If we are unable to process payment then we will endeavour to contact you to notify you of this. Until the account is settled then you will be denied use of your storage services.
Are there any hidden extras that I will have to pay?
The price you get online or from a member of our team is the cost of your storage per week including VAT. This price is guaranteed as soon as you hold or reserve the storage unit.
There are three other things to consider:
- You will need a padlock to secure your storage unit (you can bring your own or buy one from us).
- You will need insurance cover for your belongings in storage.
- You will also be required to provide us at least 1 week's security deposit (or more as applicable).
We do not charge extra for extended hours access - you can get 24 hours access on request. Otherwise, no, there are no hidden extras.
How much does it cost to store my belongings?
The price of a storage unit depends on the size, location and how long you need the storage for.
We have a variety of storage units, use our handy Space Calculator to estimate which size works best for you. I have lost my own padlock key, what should I do?
Your storage manager can arrange for a locksmith or member of our team to cut your lock off if necessary; however there is a minimum £20 charge for cutting off the lock. If you would like us to provide a replacement then we have a variety of padlocks available. Please browse our packaging supplies, or get in touch with a member of the team if you require any of these services.
What happens if I forget my access code?
You should contact your storage manager during office hours and they will be able to help you.
Do you have CCTV?
We have CCTV to cover the storage location, therefore all movements in and out of the property will be recorded – Smile please!
What security do you have?
Your belonging are protected by a variety of security measures including 24 hour CCTV, PIN coded entry, security fencing and alarm systems at some of our locations. For security reasons please visit your nearest storage location and ask the storage manager for further details.
And, just like protecting your possessions at home, we are able to offer you insurance to cover your valuables in storage.
Can you help me with removals?
We have a list of reliable and trusted local removal companies who can help organise your move for you. In fact the only reason we will pass on their details is because we keep getting good feedback from our customers about their moving experiences.
What other services can you help us with?
- Delivery/Courier services: Speak to your storage manager if you would like to arrange to have deliveries collected on your behalf.
- Wi-Fi internet access: Some of our storage locations have access to Wi-Fi; please contact your storage manager for additional information.
Is there Wi-Fi at the site?
Yes. Wi-Fi internet access is available at some of our storage locations. Please contact your storage manager for additional information.
Can you accept deliveries on my behalf?
Yes. Speak to your storage manager if you would like to arrange to have deliveries sent or collected on your behalf and we can discuss your requirements.
Can you help with loading my possessions into my storage space?
No. Your storage manager aims to help your move run as smoothly as possible, but we do not expect or train our staff to offer a loading service. Please get in touch for details of companies who have the experience to help move your belongings.
Can you remove rubbish or waste that I don’t need?
Yes. Speak to your storage manager if you would like to arrange to have unwanted items removed from your storage unit. We have a number of charities and partners we can put you in contact with, alternatively if it is left for us to remove we will have to charge for its removal.
Are your storage units climate controlled?
No. We do not control the temperature or humidity in your storage units. You should consider carefully what items you are intending to store. If you are lucky enough to have a fine art or wine collection then an alternative and specialised temperature and climate controlled environment should be considered.
However, most of us have everyday items that have arrived in the home or office via a shipping container or on the back of a truck. Therefore a dry, clean and well ventilated storage environment is recommended, and this is what we provide you with.
Can I drive up to my storage unit?
Yes. All our storage units are all at ground level allowing you to park right in front. This means if you have heavy or bulky items you can load straight in!
Removal companies love it - not only does it make their job easier, but it’s much quicker and saving time cost you less!
Do you have trolleys available?

Do you have lift access available?
No. All our storage units are on ground level, so no lifts.
Shipping containers/storage units
What are storage containers?
Our sturdy steel shipping containers (always bought from new and cared for with a regular maintenance regime) provide a great storage solution. Not only are they extremely secure, but they are specifically designed to withstand the most extreme of weather conditions.
How secure is my storage container?
Storage containers are both very secure and virtually vandal proof. Each container is fitted with a “lock box” which enables you to fit a padlock to the unit and make it tamper resistant. In addition you have the benefit of CCTV and other security arrangement at your storage location.
Do storage containers have problems with condensation?
There is a general misconception that condensation is an issue.
Firstly, consider carefully what items you intend to store. It is very likely that the majority of your everyday possessions have already travelled to your home or office via a storage container or on the back of a truck. Therefore a dry, clean and well ventilated storage environment is recommended, and this is what we provide you with.
However, the basic advice we provide all our customers is if you don’t store damp items there is not a problem. We have many happy customers who have stored delicate furniture, documents, clothing or bedding and electrical good without any problem. Click here to read our customer reviews.

Are there things that I am not allowed to store?
For the benefit of all our customers, you must not store (and you must not allow any other person to store) any of the following in your storage unit:
- Food or perishable goods unless securely packed so that they are protected from and do not attract vermin;
- Birds, fish, animals or any other living creatures;
- Combustible or flammable materials or liquids such as gas, paint, petrol, oil or cleaning solvents;
- Firearms, explosives, weapons or ammunition;
- Chemicals, radioactive materials, biological agents;
- Toxic waste, asbestos or other materials of a potentially dangerous nature;
- Any item which emits any fumes, smell or odour;
- Any illegal substances, illegal items or goods illegally obtained and compressed gases.

Do you have storage for cars, caravans or other vehicles?
We can offer storage for vehicles at some of our storage locations. Please get in touch your storage manager about the options available at each location.
Can I work from my storage unit?
Much like a mini warehouse hub or an archive room, your storage unit is ideal for storing stock, equipment or archive documents. However, if you require a power supply installed or use of the Wi-Fi internet access to carry out your work, then speak to your storage manager about the availability of these services.
