Got your move date? Here’s a few things you can do to help things run smoothly in the run-up.

6 week before moving checklist

Do you find the idea of moving house stressful? Follow our simple checklist and moving tips to help you to begin life in your new home on the right foot:

As we’ve said before, stress-wise moving is allegedly up there with getting married and having a baby. As a bloke, I can’t comment on the latter, but to help you take some of the stress out of your house move, we've put together this quick checklist:

1. Confirm with your moving company

Set a reminder to contact your removals company and double check all of the details for the day. You don’t want to end up with anyone turning up at the wrong time, or any mixed communications. Get any details printed out to refer to on moving day.

2. Order packing materials

By now you will have worked out which of your belongings are moving with you, so order the right materials. That means good quality boxes of the appropriate size - don’t be tempted to fill large boxes with books only to then not be able to lift them. Bubble wrap and packing paper is a must to protect valuables… and lots of packing tape to keep it all secure. All these materials are readily available online, or via your local storage provider

3. Start packing

When it comes to packing, the earlier the better we say. Start with seasonal clothes, sporting equipment or other things that are not in immediate use – pack away anything that you won’t need immediately or in the weeks leading up to the move. Then as moving day approaches you can prioritise other belongings depending on whether they are needed to hand or not.

4. Change of address

Identity fraud starts at home. Don’t allow personal data go to an empty home and end up in the wrong hands - changing your address with your bank/utilities suppliers should be pretty straightforward and we recommend doing it as a matter of priority. Remember to get in touch with Royal Mail - they offer an online redirection service, which allows you to redirect all your mail for at least three months. Allow ample time to individually follow up with your bank, credit card or store card providers.

5. Declutter and clean

Get your new life off to a good start by clearing out any clutter and getting your old house clean ready for the move. Having started packing items that are going to your new home, it’s time to start getting rid of those unwanted things, remembering the following:

  • Make sure you use up any food that won’t travel rather than binning it.
  • Cupboards and drawers – are they all empty?
  • Donate unwanted items, or hold a garage sale or eBay it?
  • Arrange carpet/curtain cleaning.

6. Insurance

With your worldly possessions on the move, it’s not too late to check how your insurance stands:

  • Notify your insurers/brokers that you are moving.
  • Can your contents insurance be taken with you?
  • Are your good covered in transit?
  • Using self storage? Will your goods be covered?

Plan your house move with these moving tips in mind and settle those pre-move anxieties, safe in the knowledge that you’ve done all you can. And if you’ve still got a couple of months until your move, then take a look at our last blog post for 8 things to do 8 weeks before moving.
